AECOM Celebrates Major $48M Expansion of Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River Trail

AECOM, a global leader in infrastructure, recently marked a major milestone in Philadelphia with the opening of the extended Schuylkill River Trail, connecting Christian Street to Grays Ferry Crescent. Awarded the design contract in 2016, AECOM has supported the project from its earliest feasibility studies through to final design and construction, playing a central role in its successful delivery.

The new trail segment enhances pedestrian and cycling connectivity by providing a fully off-road route between Center City and Grays Ferry Crescent. Designed to promote non-motorized transportation, the trail is expected to reduce traffic congestion, lower vehicle emissions, and stimulate local economic activity by attracting more visitors to the area. It also improves public safety by transforming formerly disconnected trail sections into a seamless, dedicated pathway.

“The extension of the Schuylkill River Trail represents a transformative investment in Philadelphia’s transportation and recreational infrastructure,” said Sam Donelson, Chief Executive of AECOM’s U.S. East and Latin America region. “We are proud to have played a pivotal role in designing and delivering this world-class facility that will serve the community for generations.”

AECOM navigated a range of complex engineering challenges, including industrial sites, active railroads, overhead bridges, and major utility lines—all within a tidal river environment. Their design prioritized long-term durability and low maintenance, while also contributing a striking visual element to the cityscape. The trail’s bridge features lattice-patterned cables inspired by the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, creating a new landmark along the Philadelphia waterfront.

“This project exemplifies AECOM’s dedication to building resilient, sustainable infrastructure that enhances urban mobility and quality of life,” said Michael Girman, Regional Business Line Leader for AECOM’s Transportation division in the Mid-Atlantic. “By developing innovative, site-specific solutions, we’ve delivered a trail that will stand as a vital community asset for years to come.”
