ACS Secures New Contract via Thiess in Canada

Global mining services provider Thiess has been awarded a CAD$205 million, three-year full-service mining contract by Vale Base Metals for the Stobie Open Pit Mining Project in Greater Sudbury, Ontario. This project is being revived after last being mined in 2017 to meet the rising demand for critical minerals essential for the transition to zero emissions.

Thiess will leverage advanced technology to effectively extract minerals from lower-grade deposits and will collaborate closely with the United Steelworkers Locals 6500 and 2020, as well as local First Nations businesses, including Z’gamok Construction LP and Aki-eh Dibinwewziwin Limited Partnership.

Thiess Executive Chair and CEO Michael Wright expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, stating, “We’re excited to bring our global technical expertise and engineering capabilities to this major Canadian mining operation for Vale.”

Wright emphasized Vale’s commitment to meaningful Indigenous participation in the project while balancing obligations to the USW workforce and promoting sustainable resource management.

Darrell White, Thiess Group Executive for the Americas, noted, “We look forward to partnering with Vale, our First Nation partners, the United Steelworkers, and the Sudbury community to support Canada’s nickel and copper industry, which is vital for North America’s clean energy transition.”

Vale’s head of Ontario operations, Gord Gilpin, remarked, “This contract represents a strategic step for Vale, enhancing production from near-surface deposits while fostering collaboration with our key partners in First Nations and the USW Locals.”

The Stobie Open Pit Mining Project will follow a high-trust, collaborative model among all stakeholders to ensure it delivers long-term social and economic benefits for the local communities.
