CPB Contractors has successfully completed the Airside Civil and Pavement works package—the first major construction milestone for Sydney’s new 24-hour Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI). This achievement marks the official certification of the airport’s runway and key airside facilities, underscoring the rapid progress of this landmark infrastructure project.
As one of five contracted works packages at WSI, this project involved extensive efforts from thousands of workers, totaling 2.7 million work hours. The team transformed the site to build a 3.7 km runway, featuring around 3,000 aeronautical ground lights and 248 high-intensity approach lights. These facilities are designed to support up to 10 million passengers annually from the airport’s opening in 2026.
Beyond the runway and lighting, the Airside Civil and Pavement works package included the design and construction of taxiway pavements, aircraft pavement markings, airside roads, surface water drainage systems, airside security fencing, and landscaping.
Christian Byrne, Project Director at CPB Contractors, expressed pride in the joint CPB Contractors/ACCIONA team’s role in this transformative project. He highlighted the enormous effort required to source, import, and process millions of tonnes of high-quality quarry materials to build aviation pavements to stringent FAA standards.
The aircraft pavements were constructed with a strong focus on safety and team collaboration. Notably, the project introduced an Australian-first “true-slip forming” concrete paving methodology, enhancing both productivity and safety.
CPB Contractors, in partnership with Acciona, led the Airside Civil and Pavement works and continues its commitment to delivering other key projects in the precinct, including Stage 1 Cargo Works at Western Sydney Airport.
