NCC to Refurbish Oslo’s Majorstuen Metro Station for Improved Accessibility and Efficiency
NCC and Sporveien, the operator of Oslo’s metro and tramway system, have entered into an agreement to undertake a comprehensive refurbishment of the Majorstuen metro station in Oslo. The project aims to enhance accessibility within the station, improve its surrounding areas, and upgrade critical infrastructure. The total order value of this project is approximately SEK 350 million.
“The station upgrade is necessary to improve the capacity and efficiency of the Oslo metro,” said Kenneth Nilsson, Head of NCC Infrastructure. “The project consists of multiple disciplines and is therefore well suited to our expertise and our capability to implement infrastructure projects in urban environments.”
The refurbishment involves several key components. NCC will replace existing tracks and upgrade technical systems to enhance operational efficiency. Additional work includes drainage improvements and the expansion and renovation of platforms, ceilings, roofs, ramps, and stairways. Moreover, a new pedestrian and cycle bridge will be constructed over the tracks to the west of the station area, ensuring smoother and safer connections for commuters and cyclists alike.
“Upgrading the Majorstuen station is crucial if the metro is to run more frequently through the center of Oslo in the future,” noted Hanna Rachel Broch, Development Manager at Sporveien. “Sporveien is therefore delighted to sign an agreement with NCC for the main works at Majorstuen station. NCC offered the best combination of price and quality. We now look forward to a busy summer of work in 2025.”
The Majorstuen station serves as a critical hub in Oslo’s public transport network. Enhancing its functionality and capacity is a necessary step to meet the growing demand for efficient and sustainable urban transportation in the city. The planned upgrades will not only improve the station’s infrastructure but also create a more accessible and user-friendly environment for all passengers, including those with reduced mobility.
One of the key highlights of the project is the new pedestrian and cycle bridge, which is expected to significantly enhance connectivity in the area. This addition reflects Oslo’s broader commitment to promoting sustainable urban mobility by encouraging walking and cycling as viable modes of transportation.
Work on the project is scheduled to begin in April 2025 and will continue through early summer 2026. The timing of the project has been carefully planned to minimize disruption to daily metro operations while ensuring that the upgrades are completed within the set timeframe.
NCC to Undertake Metro Station Renovation
The SEK 350 million project value will be recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024 under the NCC Infrastructure business area. This reflects NCC’s growing portfolio of infrastructure projects, which continue to focus on improving urban transport systems across Scandinavia.
NCC’s proven expertise in managing complex urban infrastructure projects positions the company as a reliable partner for Sporveien in delivering this ambitious upgrade. With a strong emphasis on quality, safety, and efficiency, NCC aims to ensure that the Majorstuen station refurbishment meets Oslo’s current and future transportation needs.
As the city continues to grow and develop, modernizing key transport hubs like Majorstuen is essential to supporting sustainable urban development. The project promises to improve commuter experiences, enhance public transport capacity, and contribute to the city’s long-term goals for accessibility and sustainability.
Once completed, the revamped Majorstuen station will stand as a testament to the collaborative efforts between NCC and Sporveien in shaping Oslo’s future as a modern and connected city.
