U-Haul® Holding Company has finalized the acquisition of one of Arizona’s most iconic skyscrapers, announcing plans to establish its new headquarters at 20 E. Thomas Road in Midtown Phoenix. The building, now renamed The U-Haul Tower, is set to become a cornerstone of U-Haul’s operations as the company continues its legacy as an industry leader.
Transition to The U-Haul Tower
The 548,938-square-foot U-Haul Tower rises 25 stories and stands 397 feet tall, making it the tallest high-rise outside of Downtown Phoenix and the third tallest in the state. Originally constructed in 1989 as the CenturyLink® Tower, the building is being repurposed to serve as the future headquarters of U-Haul International and its subsidiaries.
The move to The U-Haul Tower will take place over the next two years as U-Haul transitions its field-support teams from its current location at 2727 N. Central Ave., just one block away. The company has been a fixture in Midtown Phoenix since 1967, employing 1,600 team members at its Midtown Campus and more than 34,000 across its North American network.
“Our move to the tallest building in Midtown Phoenix is both symbolic and substantive,” said Sam Shoen, Vice Chair of U-Haul Holding Company. “It reflects the position our team has built as an industry and community leader over the past eight decades. The U-Haul Tower will serve as a home for the premier workforce in the Valley as we look to the decades ahead.”
Commitment to Midtown Phoenix
U-Haul’s history in Midtown Phoenix dates back to 1967, when the company relocated from Portland and took residence in the Central Towers. Over the decades, the Midtown Campus has expanded significantly, including the addition of the Shoen Family Conference and Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art wellness facility that opened in 2021. This investment underscores U-Haul’s dedication to its team members and its long-term commitment to the Midtown community.
Joe Shoen, Chairman of U-Haul Holding Company, reflected on the company’s journey:
“I vividly recall when my father moved U-Haul to Phoenix in 1967. Back then, our operations were much smaller, but we had a long-term vision for the future. Today, we remain a family-owned and -operated company. This acquisition strengthens our efficiency at the home office, enabling us to better support our field teams in meeting the mobility and storage needs of North America.”
