AECOM Selected to Upgrade Port Darlington Water Pollution Control Plant in Ontario

AECOM, a globally trusted infrastructure consulting firm, announced it has been selected by the Regional Municipality of Durham to provide engineering services for upgrades to the Port Darlington Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP), which serves approximately 50,000 residents in Bowmanville. The upgrades aim to improve the plant’s performance and reliability while promoting environmental sustainability, reducing energy waste, and lowering operational costs to benefit the region and community.

With extensive experience managing major water and wastewater infrastructure projects worldwide, we are eager to support the Regional Municipality of Durham in delivering reliable wastewater treatment to Bowmanville residents,” said Beverley Stinson, Chief Executive of AECOM’s global Water business. “Our Sustainable Legacies strategy emphasizes infrastructure’s role in creating a better world, and this project provides an excellent opportunity to protect Durham’s water resources and enhance environmental safety and sustainability.”

The four-year contract includes two main upgrade projects. The first involves replacing the aging Waste Gas Burner (WGB) with an enclosed flame WGB. The second focuses on upgrades to Plant 1’s liquid treatment systems, SCADA system, and other essential enhancements. Key elements include updating Plant 1’s primary and secondary clarifier mechanisms, improving the aeration system, and implementing fully integrated SCADA and PLC programming, all of which will be completed in-house by AECOM.

As Bowmanville anticipates significant population growth, strengthening its wastewater infrastructure is essential to meet increasing demands,” said Richard Barrett, Chief Executive of AECOM’s Canada region. “Our experience with similar retrofit projects, combined with our familiarity with the Regional Municipality of Durham, positions us to deliver these upgrades efficiently while minimizing disruptions to plant operations.”

AECOM has a proven track record of delivering wastewater plant retrofits across North America, including the Los Angeles Joint Water Pollution Control Plant and New York City’s Wastewater Resiliency Program. Their expertise includes optimizing oxygen utilization, navigating environmental regulations, and in-house SCADA programming.
