AECOM Selected for Upgrade and Expansion Design of Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant

AECOM Selected to Lead Expansion of Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Austin

AECOM (NYSE: ACM), a globally recognized infrastructure consulting firm, has been chosen by the City of Austin as the prime consultant for the expansion of the Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Austin, Texas. This initiative aims to enhance the operational and environmental capabilities of the aging facility by increasing its capacity from 75 million gallons per day (MGD) to 100 MGD. As Austin’s population continues to grow, these upgrades will strengthen the resilience of the community’s wastewater infrastructure while protecting the surrounding ecosystem.

Beverley Stinson, CEO of AECOM’s global Water business, stated, “As the leading firm in Water consulting, we are excited to continue our long-standing partnership with the City of Austin to ensure that the Walnut Creek Expansion provides state-of-the-art treatment capabilities for the local community. Our teams are pioneers in the global initiative for efficient and cost-effective nutrient removal, and we will apply our extensive expertise to enhance the plant and improve effluent water quality to protect the environment while addressing both current and future community needs.”

The scope of AECOM’s work includes process, mechanical, civil, electrical, and structural engineering services aimed at modernizing the existing infrastructure while integrating advanced operational and environmental features. Key components of the expansion include replacing outdated equipment, constructing a new 25 MGD treatment train, and building a new 120-inch outfall line and structure. Additionally, the project will implement wet weather treatment with new 100 MGD cloth filters and construct a flood wall to protect against 100-year floods, in line with the National Weather Service’s historic Atlas 14 flood risk study.

Matt Crane, CEO of AECOM’s U.S. West region, commented, “AECOM has a long history of collaboration with the City of Austin, having designed significant portions of the city’s major water and wastewater treatment plants. Our expertise in complex treatment design will help create an exceptionally resilient and sustainable facility, in alignment with our Sustainable Legacies strategy, aimed at making a lasting positive impact through every project we undertake.”

Originally constructed in 1977 with an 18 million gallon per day capacity, the Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant has undergone three expansions in 1987, 1990, and 2005, reaching its current capacity of 75 million gallons per day. The facility is expected to remain operational during the renovation work.
