A significant transportation milestone has been achieved with the inauguration of the Lhasa-Shigatse Expressway in Tibet. This newly completed highway, a crucial segment of the G4218 Ya’an-Yecheng Expressway, markedly enhances connectivity between Lhasa and western Tibet, strengthening the region’s transportation network. The 167-kilometer expressway, designed to first-class highway standards, features four lanes and a design speed of 100 km/h, marking a major advancement in Tibet’s infrastructure development.
One of the project’s most challenging sections was the 12-kilometer stretch in Rinbung County, where over 92% of the route consists of bridges and tunnels. The high-altitude conditions, averaging 3,850 meters, combined with complex geological factors, presented significant obstacles.
A standout feature of the expressway is the Sendongba Tunnel, which extends 3,528 meters with a maximum depth of 604 meters. The construction faced numerous difficulties, including rock bursts, water inrushes, and mud inrushes. Despite these challenges, along with high-altitude conditions and power shortages, the project was successfully completed through advanced engineering techniques and rigorous safety measures.
The new expressway is set to be a pivotal element in Tibet’s “one circle, two wings” urban development strategy. It is expected to facilitate the creation of a 3-hour economic zone around Lhasa, promoting regional integration and economic growth. Additionally, the enhanced transportation links are anticipated to improve living standards and boost economic opportunities for communities across western Tibet.
