INTERMAT 2024 aims to promote the collective excellence of the construction sector,
which is ready to meet the significant challenges facing the industry in terms of
decarbonisation and energy, digitalisation, CSR commitment, training and employment.
The event will also feature a platform for dialogue with the public authorities.
To that end, approximately twenty round tables have been scheduled to take place on
the BFM Business TV set located in the Industry Area, at the heart of the trade show, in
order to showcase the efforts of the five main industry federations: DLR, EVOLIS, FFB,
FNTP and SEIMAT. The presidents of these organisations will sign “The sector’s four
commitments for low-carbon and sustainable construction equipment” manifesto on
24 April at 11:30 am.
Key figures for construction materials and equipment
Machinery accounts for about 20% of a construction site’s greenhouse gas emissions.
This is a significant proportion, meaning the fleet needs to be decarbonised quickly. This
explains the tremendous innovation drive of construction companies, who are doing their
utmost to speed up the sector’s energy transition.
Companies producing construction equipment include those involved in building, civil
engineering, materials preparation and bulk handling. They turnover €5.8 billion
(provisional, excluding wholesale business-to-business).
The output from French companies manufacturing construction equipment increased by
4.1% (in value) in 2022 compared to 2021. It reached €3.8 billion in 2022, predominantly
for public works equipment (€2.2 billion). There are 90 production sites employing 14,500
people.
The companies that produce handling equipment cover industrial forklift trucks, handling
systems, industrial lifting and storage equipment. They achieve a turnover of €8.8 billion
(provisional, excluding wholesale business-to-business).
The output from French companies manufacturing handling equipment increased by
10.4% (in value) compared to 2021. Boosted by growth in the industrial forklift trucks range
and in systems, it reached €5.3 billion in 2022. There are 93 production sites employing
17,700 people. (Source EVOLIS).
According to the SEIMAT survey, 2023 was marked by a slight decline in volume for all
construction and handling equipment in mainland France:
- Heavy equipment: down 6% in volume, with 12-tonne crawler excavators down 16%
and wheel excavators over 11 tonnes up 16%. - Compact Materials: Up 4%, reaching 18,864 machines, with mini excavators accounting
for more than 71% of the volume. - Road and compacting equipment: sales were stable, with the exception of rammers and
plate compactors, which fell by 25%. - Concrete equipment: Up 7%, marking an increase after a shortage of chassis cabins in
2022 - Handling and lifting equipment: Down 1%, with stable sales of forklifts and
telehandlers.
The BFM Business TV show programme at the heart of the Industry Area
This programme will present a series of round table discussions covering innovation, new
energies, sustainable cities, CSR and new professions. It will engage public authorities on the
sector’s fundamental role in achieving carbon neutrality. These speeches will be led by high-
level speakers from construction companies, project owners and contractors, energy
suppliers, innovators, trainers and institutions, etcetera.
