Implenia Acquires Zigmo Engineering to Strengthen Engineering and Planning Capabilities
Implenia has signed a purchase agreement on 29 May 2026 to acquire Zigmo Engineering, a specialist structural engineering and building design firm headquartered in Frankenthal, Germany. The transaction marks another strategic step in Implenia’s efforts to expand its engineering and planning capabilities across key markets in Central Europe.
Zigmo Engineering is a well-established company with more than 70 highly qualified professionals operating across five locations in Germany. The firm has built a strong reputation in structural engineering, building design, and model-based planning services, supported by advanced digital workflows and deep technical expertise.
The completion of the acquisition is expected on 13 July 2026, following the closing of the transaction and fulfillment of standard regulatory and contractual conditions. Once finalized, Zigmo Engineering will become part of the Implenia Group, further strengthening its Service Solutions division.
This acquisition is aligned with Implenia’s long-term strategy to enhance its position as a leading provider of integrated engineering and design services in Germany and Switzerland. The integration of Zigmo Engineering is expected to significantly reinforce Implenia’s capabilities in BIM-supported structural engineering, digital design processes, and regulatory compliance-related planning services.
Zigmo Engineering brings strong expertise in Building Information Modeling (BIM), a methodology that enables more efficient, accurate, and collaborative design and construction planning. BIM-based processes allow project stakeholders to work with integrated digital models that reduce errors, improve coordination, and enhance project transparency across all stages of development.
In addition to its digital engineering strengths, Zigmo Engineering also has specialized knowledge in regulatory frameworks such as the German Water Resources Act (WHG) and the Water Safety Ordinance (AwSV). This expertise is particularly valuable in infrastructure and industrial projects where environmental compliance and water protection regulations play a critical role in design and execution.
By integrating these capabilities, Implenia expects to reduce design inconsistencies and rework during construction, while improving the reliability of planning outcomes. The combination of advanced modeling techniques and regulatory expertise is expected to support more informed decision-making and higher execution quality across projects.
Importantly, Implenia and Zigmo Engineering are not new to working together. The two companies have successfully collaborated on multiple projects in the past, establishing a foundation of mutual trust and operational compatibility. This prior cooperation is expected to facilitate a smooth integration process following the completion of the acquisition.
The addition of Zigmo Engineering is also expected to enhance Implenia’s Service Solutions division, which focuses on delivering integrated engineering, planning, and consulting services. With increasing demand for digitally enabled construction and infrastructure planning, Implenia aims to position this division as a leading engineering and design service provider in both Germany and Switzerland.
Jens Vollmar, Chief Executive Officer of Implenia, highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition and its alignment with the company’s broader growth objectives.
“With this acquisition, we are continuing to expand our business in high-margin areas along the value chain,” Vollmar said. “In line with our strategy, our aim is to continue to grow in the field of engineering and building design in the German market. Implenia offers an ideal environment for Zigmo to develop successfully and benefit from shared synergies.”
His remarks underline Implenia’s focus on strengthening higher-value segments of the construction and infrastructure sector, particularly those driven by technical expertise, digital innovation, and early-stage project involvement.
The integration of Zigmo Engineering is expected to contribute to this strategy by enhancing Implenia’s ability to participate earlier in project development cycles. Early involvement in design and planning is increasingly seen as a key competitive advantage in the construction industry, allowing companies to influence cost efficiency, sustainability outcomes, and overall project quality from the outset.
For Zigmo Engineering, joining Implenia represents both a continuation and an expansion of its long-term development. The company’s founder and former owner, Frank Hüther, emphasized the strategic fit between the two organizations and the opportunities created by the transaction.
“Implenia is the best new owner to ensure a viable succession plan,” Hüther said. “Digitalisation and involvement in the early stages of projects are key priorities for the two parties, and both the business and our employees will have excellent opportunities for development within the Group.”
His comments reflect the importance of succession planning in engineering and consulting businesses, where continuity of expertise and client relationships is essential for long-term success. By joining a larger organization like Implenia, Zigmo Engineering gains access to broader resources, international project opportunities, and enhanced technological capabilities.
The acquisition also reflects broader trends in the construction and engineering sector, where companies are increasingly consolidating to strengthen digital capabilities, expand service offerings, and improve competitiveness. Demand for BIM-based design, integrated project delivery, and regulatory-compliant engineering solutions continues to grow across Europe, driven by infrastructure modernization and sustainability requirements.
Implenia’s strategy focuses on leveraging such trends by investing in companies that enhance its technical depth and expand its service portfolio. The acquisition of Zigmo Engineering fits within this approach by adding specialized expertise in structural engineering, digital modeling, and environmental compliance.
Following the completion of the transaction, Zigmo Engineering is expected to operate as part of Implenia’s Service Solutions division while maintaining continuity in its operations and client relationships. The company’s existing teams and leadership structure are expected to remain in place, ensuring stability during the integration phase.
With this acquisition, Implenia strengthens its position as a key player in the European engineering and construction landscape. The combined capabilities of both companies are expected to support more efficient project delivery, improved design accuracy, and enhanced value creation for clients across Germany, Switzerland, and beyond.
As the construction industry continues to evolve toward more digital, integrated, and sustainability-focused practices, the integration of Zigmo Engineering into Implenia represents a strategic move toward building a more advanced and resilient engineering services platform.
